13 – Selfish

Merc

“Get out Damon.” She sneered as my name spat from her mouth. “I can’t stand to look at you right now.”

Lily used my given name, but the disappointment and anger in her tone made it feel like we were back in that time before I realized who she was to me. The time when we were married on paper only out of obligation and not because there were feelings between us – at least not from my end. Her use of my name reminded me of the way she would speak to me then, as if I were nothing more than scum on her shoe that she would scrape off eventually.

Funny enough, that’s exactly what I felt like. Even though I was angry about our argument the night before and all the things that had been said and threats that had been lodged, I had fucked up.

“What about the kids?”

“I’ll tell them you’re on a run for a few days, so you need to stay out of sight, after that, when cooler heads can prevail, we’ll discuss where to go from there. Until then, you keep your dirty fucking whores away from my family.”

“I don’t plan on touching anyone, Lil.”

“I wasn’t including you in my family.”

“That’s a low fucking blow, Lily.”

“No, the low blow was the one you got last night from a club whore. It hit us both right where we expected it to. That ‘blow’ got to your dick while it stabbed me right in my heart. Just like old times. Now, get out before I say something you might truly regret.”

“Don’t you mean something you’ll regret, Lil?” Instead of answering, she sneered at me. “Don’t forget, you threatened to have some random man impregnate you. You’ve already said things I think we both regret.”

After that, I left, because she was right. If we continued to stand there and tear one another down, there would never be any fixing our situation. Hell, there might not be any way to fix that shit now. There was no way I would forget anytime soon that she threatened to step out on me. I would always wonder, and heaven forbid she ever did get pregnant. I would know because there would be no way that I could be the father. Then what?

When I got back to the clubhouse, I went to the wall where our fathers’ kuttes hung and I stared at them both for a really long time. “I fucked up,” I admitted to them as if they were standing before me. “I don’t know where we go from here or how in the hell things jumped so far off the tracks. If you’re out there watching over any of us, help Lily. She needs it more than any of us know, I think. Especially after I screwed up so badly last night.”

I touched each of their images and turned to head toward my office. One of the prospects was behind the bar. “Anything I can get you?”

“No, just make sure the bar’s stocked for the night, trash is out, and then take off for a bit.
